Frequently Asked QuestionsFAQ
The answers provided below are based on answers previously given to customers' questions.
Can I let my child under 18 years old drive a scooter or electric car by themselves?
No, because you must be at least 18 years old to rent a scooter and 22 years old to rent an electric car. Only the person who enters into the vehicle rental agreement may operate the vehicle. Therefore, the minimum age for drivers will be 18 and 22 years old respectively. We apologize for any inconvenience, but rules like this are standard at any U.S. rental car agency and are required by insurance regulations.
Can you drive a scooter or electric car outside of the island of Key West?
No. You can drive only within the city limits of Key West. Under Florida law, highways are off-limits to electric cars, golf carts, and scooters of all types because the minimum highway speed is set at 40mph except for certain exceptions in congested areas. Scooters can reach a maximum of 40mph but this would be quite risky unless you are an expert rider. Key West electric cars and golf carts have lower top speeds.
All of the streets on the island of Key West have posted speed limits of 30mph or less, so you can go anywhere on the island. This includes South Roosevelt Blvd. which is technically part of US highway A1A. The speed limit in Old Town is 20mph, so these vehicles are very useful for getting around the heart of Key West. The Key West city limits include most of Stock Island, and US1 crosses on to Stock Island with a 35mph limit, but be very careful of the busy highway traffic. An easy rule of thumb is to consider the CVS on the eastern edge of Stock Island as your travel limit.
Do you offer pick up at one location and drop off at another?
Yes, you may request a shuttle drop-off at a different location within Key West.
Do you provide a pickup service from the airport, cruise ship port, ferry, or our hotel?
Yes, Tours of Key West is happy to offer complimentary customer pick-up from anywhere in Key West, including the airport, cruise ship port, ferry, or your hotel. Your Key West 1 Seater Scooter Rental email confirmation will contain a local phone number to coordinate your pickup. Avoid expensive taxis and high price parking, and let Tours of Key West make your vacation easy.
How do I return a scooter or an electric car after hours?
If you need to return a scooter or electric car after hours, simply drive to the rental center and park where the other vehicles are parked. You may drop the keys in the after-hours drop box located at the rental check-out booth.
How fast do your scooters go?
All Key West rental scooters have a top speed of 40 mph. Their 49cc engines are designed to fall below the engine size and top speed levels that would require a scooter to be licensed as motorcycles in most states. If the engine were larger, riders would also need to have a motorcycle endorsement on their driver’s license. Scooters cannot be ridden on Florida highways, which generally have a 40mph minimum speed. An important exception is South Roosevelt Blvd along the island’s south shoreline. Although it is technically part of US Highway A1A, the speed limit on Roosevelt is 30mph, so it is fine to ride a scooter to popular spots like Higgs Beach, the Edward B. Knight Pier, and Smathers Beach.
How late can I get the free shuttle?
Free shuttle service available from 8am until 10pm daily is included with every Key West scooter and electric car rental. All the information you need to take advantage of the shuttle when picking up or dropping off your vehicle will be sent in an email when your booking is completed. You can also contact our customer service representatives if you have further questions.
How old do you have to be to rent a scooter?
You must be at least 18 years old to rent a scooter in Key West and only the person on the rental agreement can drive the scooter. The rules covering rental and private vehicles are different as is the case in most states. You may occasionally see younger riders because Florida law allows anyone 16 and up with a driver’s license to ride a motor scooter on the road. Those young riders will be local residents with their own scooters, not the children or young friends of Key West visitors. And remember, scooter riders (electric cars and golf carts too) must follow the same laws that apply to other motor vehicles. This includes being issued a DUI citation should you get caught riding while intoxicated.
How old should you be to drive a Scooter?
Much like a regular car or truck, the driver must be 18 years or older and have a valid driver’s license. Any passengers should be tall enough to reach the foot pedals (usually 8 or 9 years old).
What is the weather cancellation policy?
If the Key West 1 Seater Scooter Rental must be canceled due to bad weather, and you cannot go on another day or time, you will be issued a refund by Tours of Key West.
Where can I park my car?
If required, parking instructions for the Key West 1 Seater Scooter Rental will be included in your confirmation email.

The only way to see Key West!
Michael B, Jan 2023 Verified
First - book directly with Hydro Thunder. TripAdvisor does a poor job of explaining exactly where you need to go to pick up the scooters - this was a theme we realized across multiple booked activities and excursions. Once we sorted all that out, we had a wonderful experience with Hydro Thunder. They were flexible with us, took the time to explain how to use the Vespas we rented (they are quite heavy) and got us all set up. We absolutely loved the experience of riding around Key West in the sunshine and seeing the city up close and personal. Highly recommend Hydro Thunder!
Perfect scooter

The company runs like a well oilled machine. The very one has a roll in taking care of the customer. When we got to our location via the scooter shuttle bus, our scooter was ready. The scooter was in great shape. It wasn’t beat up like others Ives seen at other places. The scooter ran like a champ.

My son has some mobility issues, so we decided to rent scooter while in Key West for the day. The staff was great (very funny & helpful), and the scooter worked very well. The rental process was quick and easy. Highly recommend!
Just what we needed

We upgraded to a golf cart. Easy to rent and easy to return. The only note I would add is, if you drive there by car and pull into the resort parking lot, it’s a mess. No where to park because it’s for guests (understandable) Better to go on the side street next to the check in area.
Great experience

My husband and I had a blast driving around key west on the 2 person scooter. We visited key west for just a day as a part of our cruise, and the walk to the scooter pick up location was only about 5 minutes from our ship. They were surprisingly very simple to drive and have a little compartment in the seats that locks if you need a storage place. Friendly people working the stand
Awesome Key West 1 Scooter

Compliance status
We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience,
regardless of circumstance and ability. To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level.
These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible
to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more. This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific
disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML,
adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments. If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email
Screen-reader and keyboard navigation
Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with
screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive
a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements,
alongside console screenshots of code examples:
Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website.
In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels;
descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups),
and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag
for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology.
To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on
as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.
Disability profiles supported in our website
Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.
Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments
Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.
Browser and assistive technology compatibility
We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers), both for Windows and for MAC users.
Notes, comments, and feedback
Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs, there may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to
